New festivals continue to be developed on Amelia Island to enhance local living as well as this barrier island's allure for tourists. Intellectually stimulating events, combined with the beautiful and historic setting of this resort island in northeast Florida, help to attract a diverse mix of tourists and residents.
In 2008, the exciting Amelia Island Film Festival (AIFF) is to debut in the fall. Are you an independent film maker or student? Now is the time for creative, talented film makers to submit their original works for consideration to the AIFF (the deadline has been extended to May 3, 2008). This new cultural event is to be held September 25 to October 1, 2008 on Amelia Island.
Amelia Island is known for its famous Shrimp Festival, celebrating its 45th year in 2008, and featuring over 300 artists and craftsmen from around the U.S. (plus lots of entertainment and seafood). The Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival attracts more than 100,000 people over the first weekend in May each year.
During the last decade, the successful Amelia Island Chamber Music Festival and the Amelia Island Book Festival were developed. Last year in 2007, was the inaugural Wild Amelia festival, focusing on local nature here in northeast Florida.

Interestingly, one of the organizers of the film festival spotted Kevin Spacey here on Amelia Island, and personally invited him to participate in Amelia's new film festival (read about it by reading the blog on the film festival's web site, see link below). Spacey reportedly had been filming "Recount" in nearby Jacksonville, and apparently visited our quaint historic district in Fernandina Beach.
Remember the hanging chads? "Recount" is an HBO film about Florida's notorious voting fiasco of the 2000 presidential election. The Amelia Island Film Festival will take place in the fall on Amelia Island, from Thursday, September 25, 2008 until October 1, 2008. For further information about the film festival, go to http://www.AmeliaIslandFilmFestival.org where you can also download an application to submit your film for consideration.
