American Myth Debunked: The "Real" First Thanksgiving in Florida

Posted in: Island Perspective

Plymouth and Pilgrims connote to most Americans the scene of the very first Thanksgiving. Forget those textbook images and instead picture a more balmy southern setting for Thanksgiving in the Sunshine State.  Florida historians want Americans to know that the "real" first Thanksgiving was long before the Pilgrim landing, when Spanish explorers hosted a Thanksgiving feast with the Florida Timucua indians as guests. Play Me A Memory: Billy Joel, Elton John Face 2 Face

Posted in: Island Perspective

Nostalgic baby boomers basked in youthful memories, swaying to tunes of their fellow boomers, Billy Joel and Elton John. The icons of ivory, “the” piano men, gave fans their money's worth, at this very first show of the “Face 2 Face” 2009 world tour, kicked off in Jacksonville, Florida. Many songs conjured up memories that have been in the vault a long time. Who doesn't hear a tune from long ago and remember something or someone from the past?  The economy is bad.  Regardless, fans turned out “to forget about life for awhile.”  For a night we forgot our 401Ks have tanked, along with our home equity.  We were "in the mood for a melody," and the artists were greeted with a sea of smiling faces in coastal northeast Florida. Posted in: Island Perspective

WHALEINDEX.jpg
One of the most endangered large whale species is seen each winter in the waters near Amelia Island, Florida, as well as nearby off St. Marys and Cumberland Island, Georgia. Right whale females migrate between November and March to give birth, and are monitored in the waterways off coastal Florida and Georgia by various scientists. Estimates put the number of right whales at perhaps  350 to 400 remaining worldwide, a jet black mammal described as huge – comparable to the size of a floating school bus.

Food for Thought: Buy American Wild-Caught Shrimp

Posted in: Island Perspective
shrimpboatsindex.jpg
Here in Fernandina Beach, Florida, the birth place of the modern shrimping industry, we should be even more conscious of buying wild-caught domestic shrimp than the “average” American. What better time than now, with May’s Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival, to reflect on the seaside lifestyle we are lucky to enjoy here on Amelia Island, and the bounty of the sea off our coastline.  If you’ve been to the beach at night, you’ve seen in the far distance off shore, the twinkling dots of light – the shrimp boats off Amelia’s coastline. The price tag for premiere Amelia Island oceanfront real estate is $2 to $5 million. But in the shadow of multi-million dollar beach homes, at the fringe of the dunes, is something quite priceless. There’s buried treasure on Amelia Island’s beaches, and it’s only about a foot beneath the surface.
