Fernandina Fishing: Whopper Bass, Whopper Drum

Posted in: Amelia Island Community

A massive drum fish was caught by Derek Crawford in the St. Marys inlet (near Fernandina/Florida) this past week.  Crawford's black drum catch, weighing a whopping 103.5 pounds, is a pending all-tackle Georgia record, (and beats the Florida state record, too). Scott Lawson landed the biggest fresh water bass of his life at twilight this week, caught in a Fernandina lake, weighing well over ten pounds.  READ MORE ABOUT THESE FISH TALES...

Signs of the times.  "McCain for president, Obama for president," and "closed" -- businesses shutting their doors here locally.  "Keith the contractor agrees with Joe the plumber,"  a handmade sign reads, posted on contractor's equipment in a shopping plaza along A1A.  In this small strip center adjacent to Lowe's, four retailers have now closed.  The coffee shop, Latitude's, has a sign on the door, thanking previous patrons for their former business...READ MORE...

Fernandina Beach After Storm Fay

Posted in: Amelia Island Community
Signs of tropical storm Fay were seen around the Amelia Island area this week after the storm came through northeast Florida. The sea oats that line the dunes along Main Beach Park in Fernandina, had a tattered, tired look.  At Fernandina Beach’s Main Beach Park, further evidence of the storm lay in the parking lot – sand deposited in the parking spaces in front of Sandy Bottoms. Tidy debris piles line the roadways, awaiting sanitation pickup -- evidence local residents have been quite busy cleaning up fallen branches, twigs, and leaves.  READ MORE ABOUT TROPICAL STORM FAY...

Amelia Island Area Starbucks Staying Open

It appears the three Amelia Island-area Starbucks® stores will not close, so for local java lovers, this is good news.  Perhaps since Starbucks® is "new" to Nassau County, Florida, one of Florida’s “rural” counties with great potential for future growth, it was not considered one of their over-saturated markets. Two of the local Starbucks® locations are on the A1A corridor in Yulee, Florida (the road leading from Interstate 95 to Amelia Island).  It's often referred to as “the gateway to Amelia,” where much of the area’s new growth for the next decade or two will be concentrated. The other Starbucks® is located on Amelia Island.  READ MORE...

Amelia Sea Turtles, Sand Dollars, Starfish

I started the day with a walk on the beach. I could see the tire tracks from an ATV, no doubt the Amelia Island Turtle Watch scouring the beach at early dawn for turtle tracks. As I walked along the beach, I looked down and found a perfect sand dollar.  There’s something about finding an intact sand dollar. You see plenty of broken pieces along the shoreline, but when you find a complete sand dollar, a quick bolt of glee hits you, no matter how old you are. There’s something about the beach that brings out the kid in all of us. So visit the beach soon. You never know what beach bounty awaits discovery. It’s one of life’s simple pleasures, here in this beach town.
