A PRECIOUS JEWEL OF GEORGIA...There aren’t many places in the world where one can see wild horses grazing along the beach of a preserved, secluded barrier island frozen in time. It’s difficult to describe the natural delight of this untouched island that likely looks the same as it did a century ago. Even the maritime forest looks windswept and timeless. The peaceful solitude of nature is a feast for the eyes and soul. A few days on Cumberland and you may not want to leave.

The Old and The New

A day in Fernandina’s historic district can be a contrast of the old and the new.  From horse and buggy to Segway.  Along charming and historic Center Street, the familiar horse and carriage tours plod by, with the clip-clop of hooves echoing through the preserved historic district showcasing Victorian-era architecture.  A new sight, however, for those visiting Fernandina's downtown, is a police officer on a Segway (a two-wheeled, self-balancing electric scooter that you stand on.)  Along with progress comes change, and things continue to change in the Amelia Island area -- something nobody can miss with a drive between I-95 and the island along A1A. READ MORE...

Living Becomes More Expensive on Amelia Island

Posted in: Island Perspective

centre130.jpg
Local living becomes noticeably more expensive as 2006 draws to an end.  With rising property values comes rising taxes for many property owners.  With hurricane risk in Florida (and two "abnormal" seasons in 2004 and 2005), Florida property owners are getting shocked with much higher insurance costs. (This year in 2006, there were nine named storms, but no hurricanes hit Florida, thankfully.)  And in January 2007, Amelia Island residential electric bills will go up an average of 35%. READ MORE ABOUT INCREASING COST OF LIVING...

MURDER IN FERNANDINA BEACH

Posted in: Island Perspective
In a small town like Fernandina Beach, one tends to feel a bit sheltered.  A community with its fair share of southern hospitality, strong church culture, large volunteer network, charming historic district, lots of neighborly people, and laid-back lifestyle.  It’s quintessential small-town living.  That’s one reason why Fernandina has attracted so many folks to move here. Fernandina has been called “Mayberry” in the press at times, reminiscent of simpler times.  But even in Fernandina, there’s crime, and this year several murders. READ MORE...

How You Can Help Hurricane Katrina Victims

dropoffindex.jpg
Our hearts go out to the Katrina victims in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama.  Local efforts to help assist the victims of hurricane Katrina are underway in the Amelia Island area.   Northeast Florida has dodged the bullet, without a direct hurricane hit for over four decades (the last in the Jacksonville area was Dora in 1964), but we may not always be so lucky. READ MORE ABOUT HOW TO HELP THE VICTIMS...

Amelia Island Landscape Continues To Change

Posted in: Island Perspective
For those who have not visited Amelia Island in the last five years, the landscape will be noticeably different. The Main Beach area has probably experienced one of the most dramatic face-lifts on Amelia Island during the last several years. Change, they say, is inevitable. Like paying taxes and death. But we need to protect the “feeling” of the island, one of its most prized treasures. READ MORE....

Amelia Island & Hurricanes -- Past, Present, Future

Posted in: Island Perspective
francesindex.jpg
A drive around Amelia Island told the story of Frances. Along Fletcher Avenue, beach homes touched by Frances showed their scars with roof and shingle damage all along the beach road. Even though we were spared from a direct hit, the mighty waves, squalls of rain and wind gusts of Frances did plenty of damage here on Amelia Island and on the mainland in Nassau County. When a hurricane threatens, the talk of the town becomes “are you leaving?” Like the popular rock lyrics of the Clash, “Should I stay or should I go?" becomes the dilemma of Florida residents.

A Decade on Amelia Island – Real Estate Prices Now vs. Then…

Posted in: Island Perspective
It’s been a decade since I moved to Amelia Island from New York. I was reminded of my initial search for real estate here ten years ago, a time when I was first charmed by this small-town coastal community. Rifling through boxes in my garage this past week, I discovered two real estate booklets from 1993. It was intriguing to see how cheap prime island property was here just ten years ago. And I have to wonder, of course, about the next ten years here on Amelia Island, and "speculate" what future property values may be on this barrier island, now that the island is almost built out.
