Fernandina’s February Festivals: Films & Books Featured on Amelia Island, Florida

Amelia Island, Florida Sunset at Egans Creek Marina
Authors and filmmakers gather on Amelia Island, Florida in February to participate in two festivals celebrating a passion for creative expression, whether it be on a page or on the screen.

THE AMELIA ISLAND BOOK FESTIVAL will take place on this northeast Florida barrier island Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13, 2010. The festival consists of author talks, readings, workshops, luncheons, a book marketplace, Children’s Chapter, and more. The festival brings together authors of all genres including novels of nonfiction, mystery, history, adventure, Southern literature, poetry and books for young readers.

The book festival event, held annually on Amelia Island, typically features regional authors and others from around the county. The experience affords festival-goers the opportunity to meet and hear best selling authors in a casual, friendly setting.

This year a Pulitzer Prize-winning American journalist, Rick Bragg, and best-selling novelist, Cassandra King, are among the featured authors participating at the Amelia Island Book Festival.

There’s a day of learning and sharing at the Writers’ Workshops, offered in partnership with Florida State College (at Betty Cook campus in Yulee) from 8 am to 5 pm on Friday, February 12, 2010 (tickets $90). A sampling of some of the Writers’ Workshops being offered this year include: History Through Story-Telling, Memoir Writing, Do’s and Don’ts of Publishing, From Story to Script to Screen, and others. Also, a panel of best-selling authors will present “Putting the South in Southern.”

“A Night With Poppy” is a special evening event featuring famed author, Pat Conroy (best-selling novels include Prince of Tides and The Great Santini) and his daughter, author Melissa Conroy. Tickets are $50 to this event to be held February 13, 2010 at 7 pm at the “old” First Baptist Church located in the historic district of Fernandina Beach.

BOOK FESTIVAL IS GREAT EXPERIENCE FOR CHILDREN

The main event is an all-day free festival with a featured and local author bookstore, presentations, food booths, and Children’s Chapter. If you have kids aged 3 to 12, seek out the Children’s Chapter tent where special projects and activities will be held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 from 9 am until 4 pm. This free festival day is held at St. Peter’s Episcopal church campus near historic Centre Street and 9th Street.

AMELIA ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL

After the authors depart, the filmmakers will gather on Amelia Island, Florida for the 5-day AMELIA ISLAND FILM FESTIVAL, to be held on this barrier island from February 25 to March 1st, 2010. A wide variety of films are presented during the film festival, including: “Feature films, shorts, Animation, Documentary, Narrative Fiction, Northeast Florida & Southeast Georgia Special Interest, Action, Adventure, Comedy, Drama, Educational, Horror, Musical, Romantic Comedy, Satire Social Issue, and Sci-Fi films.”  The festival also has a category of Amelia Island Home Videos. According to their mission statement, the Amelia Island Film Festival is “committed to providing the student and independent filmmaker a venue to screen their films.”

Films will be screened at various venues in historic Fernandina Beach, including at City Hall, Indigo Alley, and the Intercoastal Wine Company. The ticket price to attend a single screening is $10. The “President’s Choice Screening” will be held at Hampton Inn & Suites ($15 admission).

Love films and being on the water? There’s also a special event, “Sail with the Filmmakers,” sponsored by Cumberland Sound Ferry on Friday, February 26, 2010. Take a ferry ride ($22 per person roundtrip with $5 of each ticket going back to the AIFF). Enjoy a sail with the filmmakers from Fernandina Beach to St. Marys, Georgia, with views of Amelia Island, FL and Cumberland Island, GA. There will also be a welcome and reception by the St. Marys Film Society.

See the film festival website for further information about film festival tickets and passes, locations, and dates. http://www.ameliaislandfilmfestival.org
