Wondering what to do Labor Day weekend 2011?
Here are two events taking place on Amelia Island during the 2011 holiday weekend. Crawl the pubs in historic Fernandina Beach, listen to live music and have a few drink specials, or help support sea turtles by participating in a 5K run/walk right on the beach.
Amelia Island Turtle Trot, September 3, 2011 at 7:30 am
The Labor Day holiday weekend starts with the Amelia Island Turtle Trot, a 5K run/walk happening right on the beach this year Saturday morning, marking its 10th anniversary. The 5K competition and walk begins and ends at Main Beach Park in Fernandina Beach and there’s also a half mile and one mile “Kid’s Fun Run.” Organized by the Amelia Island Runners Club, the fundraising event benefits the local sea turtle conservation efforts of the Amelia Island Sea Turtle Watch and Fort Clinch sea turtle patrols.
Having participated in this event for a few years, I can say firsthand that it’s a rewarding experience. The Turtle Trot attracts a big turnout with runners of all ages and abilities participating. Rise early and take off on the beach when you hear the canon shot that starts the sprint at 7:30 am on Saturday, September 3, 2011. Pre-register online until 2 pm on Thursday, Sept. 1, 2011 (cost $25). Folks can also register on the day of the race beginning from 6:30 to 7:15 am at Main Beach Park (free parking). See more about the Turtle Trot, registration information at on www.AmeliaIslandRunners.com.
