Fernandina’s Main Beach Boardwalk Project Begins After Labor Day

About half of the boardwalk will be removed after Labor Day 2013 and construction of new one will begin.

FERNANDINA BEACH, Fla. – Over the Labor Day holiday weekend many people will head to the beach to enjoy the seaside. Amelia Island offers 13 miles of beautiful Atlantic coast shoreline.

Some may like to take a walk along the boardwalk at Main Beach in the next few days. A fixture at the city’s largest beach park for over 20 years, about half of the existing boardwalk will be removed after Labor Day (along with two gazebos), and a new boardwalk built.

Phase I of the construction project at Main Beach Park is the section of the boardwalk that starts at parking lot near Sandy Bottoms, extending north about about 375 feet. The new boardwalk will be placed about 30 feet west of the existing boardwalk, according to recent city commission meeting held this past week.

Local artist, David Nackashi, took the opportunity this morning to paint the boardwalk at Main Beach, capturing the existing beachscape before the scene changes. He has been painting landscapes around Fernandina for his upcoming art show downtown on September 14, 2013 (5 pm at Fernandina’s Green Turtle Tavern.)
