Plant Pollinators! Make A Bee House, How To Attract Bluebirds

The gardening gurus at Nassau County Extension offer Florida gardening tips, workshops and plant clinics. In March, learn about perfect plants for shade, the importance of adding pollinators to your garden and how to attract bluebirds.

Landscape Matters – Shade Gardening

On March 2, 2016 from 10 am until 11 am, Nassau County Master Gardener, Carol Ann Atwood, will conduct a Landscape Matters Shade Gardening class. The class will include a description of landscape plants that thrive in the shade, including plants, flowers, groundcover and trees. The class will take place at the Yulee Extension office. Butterflies, Bees, Beetles: Pollinators in your Garden

On March 9, 2016, 10 am to 11:30 am, County Extension Director/Horticulture Agent, Rebecca Jordi, and Master Gardener Bea Walker, will conduct a session on the importance of pollinators in your garden. Learn different kinds of pollination and the primary pollinators: butterflies, beetles and bees. You will also learn how to attract Mason bees. The session is free, however if you’d like to “make & take” a bean can bee house for your yard, the cost is $5 for supplies. Registration is required by March 2. Download the registration form. Completed form and your check for the (optional) bee house project can be dropped off at either the Callahan Extension office the Yulee Extension office (letter drop available). Landscape Matters – Bluebirds

On March 16, 2016, from 10 am to 11:30 am, Master Gardener Candace Bridgewater will conduct a class on attracting bluebirds to your landscape. The class will include a short history of the bluebird; ideal habitat; nesting bird enemies and how to best protect the bluebird; plant and other food sources for the bluebirds. The class is free and open to the public. An optional segment includes a workshop where participants will be assembling bluebird houses and take one home with them – limited to 20 people. The cost is $20. Registration deadline for the bluebird house workshop is March 9, by 5 pm. Forms are posted on Nassau Extension’s website. Nassau County, Florida Plant Clinics

On March 7 and 21 from 10 am until 2 pm, Rebecca Jordi, Extension Director/Horticulture Agent, will conduct Plant Clinics at the Yulee Extension office. All County residents are invited to bring plant samples showing problems in their landscapes. Problems will be identified and solutions offered for correction. There is no fee for this service.
