Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff with live bands happening at Main Beach Park, Fernandina, August 26-27, 2011

AMELIA ISLAND, Fla.–(August 8, 2011) – Bands, barbecue, and the beach sound like a winning trio on Amelia Island over an event-packed weekend in Fernandina Beach.

Visitors and residents alike can enjoy free entertainment and barbecue from some of the top competitors in the country during this family-friendly event. For those needing overnight accommodations, see special Amelia Island room deals being offered for the cook-off weekend (listed further below, along with the weekend’s entertainment schedule).

The Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff will be held at Fernandina’s Main Beach on Amelia Island starting at 3 pm on Friday, August 26, and continue at 10 am on Saturday, August 27, 2011. The cook-off area will be located on the lawn at Main Beach adjacent to the beachfront and boardwalk (see scenes of Main Beach Park in photo gallery below, click on arrows through slideshow).

More than 50 professional and amateur teams will compete. Each team will prepare a variety of barbecue entrees, including chicken, ribs, pork, and more, as they compete for more than $20,000 in prize money and trophies. Visitors will have the opportunity to purchase food and drink from various vendors.

Friday, August 26th’s, entertainment includes a performance by the New Orleans-styled Bush Doctors and the all-women country and rhythm and blues band Mustang Sally. Saturday’s live entertainment includes performances by the three-piece string band Hoffman’s Voodoo, acoustic instrument-based group The Impediments, classic rock and roll group Touch of Grey, and high energy, blues-rock band Wet Willie featuring Jimmy Hall, known for their Top 10 hit Keep On Smilin’. New in 2011, the cook-off will feature an arts and crafts area, remote control car demonstrations by Amelia Island RC, and a beach volleyball tournament.
