May 11, 2012 — Palm Class to Offer Continuing Education Credits
The International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) has accredited the Nassau County Extension Palm class for continuing education credit. The three-hour class will be held May 11, 2012 at 9 am until noon. ISA-certified arborists Rebecca Jordi (Nassau) and Larry Figart (Duval) will serve as instructors. Both are also Extension agents: Jordi is County Extension Director and Horticulture Agent; Figart is the Urban Forestry Agent. Eligible participants can receive 3 CEU credits.
“This is the first time we are holding an ISA-certified class for Palm maintenance in Nassau County. It is a comprehensive class with appropriate time to cover all aspects concerning the maintenance of palm trees – whether the palm collection is just a few trees or a commercial landscape that includes dozens of palms. This is an excellent opportunity for area landscape maintenance professionals to receive continuing education. However, the class is open to the public for the same fee,” said Jordi.
Curricula topics are: general biology of palms, cold hardy varieties, planting and fertilization; common palm diseases and nutrient deficiencies; outdoor demonstration of proper pruning and fruit stalk removal; and staking.
The registration fee is $25, which will cover the cost of handouts and a palm disease flash card set. The palm disease flash card set is available in Spanish upon request. The session will be held at the James S. Page Governmental Complex. Refreshments will be provided.
Pre-registration is required by May 4, 2012. To register, or for more information, call Winifred Favors 904-879-1019.
