It’s a big weekend on Amelia Island for nature lovers, with various activities happening here as well as opportunity to take nearby field trips to learn more about northeast Florida’s flora, fauna and eco system.
Watch Sea Turtle Release, Main Beach, Fernandina
The annual Wild Amelia Nature Festival, held in May each year, kicks off Friday at Main Beach, Fernandina with its tradition of releasing rehabbed sea turtles. The turtle release is coordinated with the Georgia Sea Turtle Center of Jekyll Island, GA. Gather on the beach Friday morning for this special sea turtle send off happening at 10 am.
FREE EcoExpo at Fernandina Rec Center
The festival, now in its ninth season, is a celebration of the local bioregion, featuring nature tours, photography workshops, a green business expo, and plenty of nature-based activities for kids. The main exhibits and expo of the Wild Amelia Nature Festival are at the Fernandina Beach Recreation Center located at 2500 Atlantic Avenue, this year being held on Saturday, May 16, 2015 from 10 am to 4 pm. The Jacksonville Zoo will bring some live animals, a StarLab planetarium will be available for exploring plus other free activities for the kids.
