Crane Island, a new community with Intracoastal Waterway frontage, is emerging on a small river island accessible by road through Amelia Island, Florida. Crane Island is making its national debut the summer of 2019, with the publicity surrounding Southern Living magazine’s 2019 Idea House, located in the community. This riverfront enclave, with the first new homes under construction during spring/summer 2019, is located adjacent to the Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport.
Southern Living’s 2019 Idea House
Called the “Crane Island River House,” the showcase home is featured in Southern Living’s August 2019 issue. Home tours of the 2019 Idea House began in June and continue through fall, until December 15, 2019 (tour tickets cost $22). Between 10,000 to 15,000 visitors are anticipated to take the tour.
Fernandina Beach Municipal Airport
Around $4.8 million was spent to rebuild Fernandina’s unique airport terminal in recent years. The renovation, completed in 2018, has created a one-of-a-kind building shaped like an airplane.
A “Pilot Community”
The Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association has published “Crane Island Pilot Community Coming To Life.” According to this May 2019 article, real estate developers (and father and son pilots), Jack B. Healan, Jr. and Jack Healan III, would like to attract aviators to live in Crane Island.
Back in 2014, Crane Island was acquired for $9.9 million by the Range at Crane Island, LLC. The development partners are global businessman Saad Wallan, and Jack B. Healan, Jr.. Saad Wallan is also a pilot, and Founder & Chairman of the Wallan Group (including Wallan Aviation). Wallan, an international businessman, brings experience from his tenure in the automotive, aviation and real estate industries. The president of Crane Island, Jack B. Healan, Jr., is well known locally as the longtime former head of the Amelia Island Company (Amelia Island Plantation — prior to Omni’s purchase in 2010).

The busiest time of the year for the island’s airport is March. A plethora of private jets associated with Amelia Island’s top posh event, the Amelia Concours d’Elegance, arrive and take off, see related Concours articles. During this world-renowned collector car event, additional tower air traffic control services are provided by the Florida Army National Guard at Fernandina’s airport.
Crane Island is platted for 113 single-family homes, with an anticipated build out of the new community by around the year 2024. Known as a very long development saga here in Fernandina Beach (that spanned three decades), environmentalists eventually lost their effort to preserve the river island in its natural state. Past road blocks to development are now in the rear view mirror. Fast forward to current times in 2019, and Crane Island properties have been annexed into the city of Fernandina Beach. The first residents of the community will be moving into new homes at Crane Island by the end of August 2019.
