July’s free horticulture programs offered by the Nassau County, Florida Extension include how to create a wildlife-friendly habitat in your landscape, plant clinics to diagnose problems and get solutions, and the benefit of bats.

July 1, 2015 — Landscape Matters Class: Are Bats Beneficial?

On July 1 from 10 am – 11:30 am Karl Shaffer and Cindy Steighner, Nassau County Master Gardeners, will conduct a session on the benefits of bats in our environment. Learn common bats species in northeast Florida, the benefits offered by having bats in the environment and how to attract bats to your yard. The session is free, however, if you’d like to “make & take” a bat house, the cost is $15 for supplies. Contact the Nassau County Extension regarding any openings for the bat house session. July 6 & 20, 2015 – Free Plant Clinics

Becky Jordi, County Extension Director/Horticulture Extension Agent will conduct a Plant Clinic from 10 am until 2 pm at the Yulee Extension Office (A1A and Pages Dairy Road). All County residents are invited to bring plant samples showing problems in their landscapes. Problems will be identified and solutions offered for correction. There is no fee for this service. July 25, 2015 — Creating a Wildlife-Friendly Habitat in your Landscape

On July 25 at 10 am, Fernandina Mulch & Stone is hosting Master Gardener volunteer Bea Walker. She will conduct a presentation on how to create a wildlife habitat in your landscape. Learn how to attract butterflies and birds and other desirable wildlife to your gardens. Learn the four key requirements to create a wildlife-friendly environment; recommended plantings will be discussed and photos of two local gardens will be featured. Learn about the resources and programs available to support your efforts! Refreshments will be provided. RSVP by July 17 is strongly encouraged.
